Twenty Students From the Edgar H. Evans Academy, IPS School #11, Recognized As Junior Special Agents

On Friday, May 5, 2006, at 1:00 p.m., Special Agent in Charge (SAC) Keith L. Lourdeau of the Indianapolis Office of the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) will recognize twenty students from The Edgar H. Evans Academy, IPS School #11, as Junior Special Agents.

The students will be graduating from the FBI’s Junior Special Agent Program which they have been participating in for the past 11 weeks. The Junior Special Agent Program was designed and implemented by the Washington Metropolitan Field Office (WMFO) in 1990, and is the most highly developed and structured component of the Adopt-A-School Program. Once a week for 12 weeks, FBI employees teach a 60-minute block of instruction to fifth grade students. The main objectives are to instill hope, confidence, and self-esteem in the students. Furthermore, the course is designed to assist in strengthening the students’ oral and written skills in fun and creative ways while providing them with positive role models.

Lessons included topics on Motivation and Goal Setting (long term and short term goals), Anger and Violence (ways to deal effectively and positively with their anger), Drug Identification (difference between legal and illegal drugs), History of the FBI, Domestic and International Terrorism, Computer Security matters and others. Additionally, the students participated in a physical fitness test which included sit-ups, push-ups, and a shuttle run.

The class, made up of 5 th grade boys, was responsible to complete homework assignments on time and strongly encouraged to participate in group discussions. The students were required to memorize the Junior Special Agent Pledge as well as submit a 100-word essay regarding “What being a Junior Special Agent Means to Me.”

The media is invited to join us at the graduation ceremony at the FBI Office, 575 North Pennsylvania Street, 4 th Floor, Room 498, Indianapolis, Indiana.
